Florence, AZ – The Town of Florence is thrilled to welcome A.J. Monroe as the new Community Development Director, effective May 13, 2024. With over 27 years of comprehensive experience, including 17-plus years with the City of Portage, Indiana, Mr. Monroe brings a wealth of expertise to his new role.

In his new role, Mr. Monroe will lead the development of Florence’s land use strategies, oversee code enforcement and building safety inspections, spearhead historic preservation efforts, and drive proactive community-based planning initiatives.

Reflecting on his appointment, Mr. Monroe expressed his eagerness to contribute to Florence’s progress, stating, “I’ve been truly impressed by the warm reception I’ve received. I eagerly anticipate contributing to the continued development, preservation, and success, of the Town of Florence.”

During his tenure in Portage, Mr. Monroe led many impactful projects including the development of numerous sections of the Marquette Greenway Trail, Portage’s City Hall remodeling, Founders Square & Plaza, and Lakefront and Riverwalk projects. He also played a pivotal role in regional planning efforts in serving as the Working Group Lead for the Marquette Plan and contributed to critical land use planning through his engagement on the Portage Northside and Downtown Master Plans.

Moreover, together with his colleagues, Mr. Monroe has garnered multiple accolades in planning, design, and environmental stewardship. Notably, projects such as the Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk, the Imagination Glen Soccer Complex, and The Marquette Plan have been recognized for their excellence.

Beyond his professional achievements, Mr. Monroe is a dedicated public servant and community advocate. Over the years, he has volunteered with organizations like the Portage Township Food Pantry, Boys and Girls Club, YMCA, and youth soccer clubs, reflecting his commitment to community service.

Mr. Monroe has been accredited as a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners since 2003 and earned his bachelor’s degree from Valparaiso University.
