Florence, AZ – The Town of Florence is proud to announce that we have been designated as a Certified Autism Center™ (CAC) by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES). This achievement signifies the successful completion of comprehensive autism training, equipping town staff with the expertise needed to effectively serve individuals with sensory challenges, and reflects the town’s commitment to inclusivity and accessibility.

Expressing her enthusiasm, Mayor Tara Walter stated, “I am delighted to announce that, in collaboration with the IBCCES, the Town of Florence is now a Certified Autism Center™. Our team’s completion of this specialized training will enhance our ability to provide exceptional service and experiences for members of the autism community.”

During April 15th’s Town Council meeting, Mayor Walter further proclaimed April as “National Autism Acceptance Month” and thanked Executive Director, Roger Biede, and the Greater Florence Chamber of Commerce for initiating these efforts in our community. In alignment with this proclamation, Florence Town Hall will be lit blue throughout April to show support for autism awareness.

In light of statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which indicate that one in 36 children in the U.S. is diagnosed with autism, and one in six individuals has sensory needs or sensitivities, the need to enhance accessibility through town programs and services is paramount.

Myron Pincomb, IBCCES board chairman, commends Florence for its achievement, stating, “This designation demonstrates Florence’s commitment to creating a welcoming environment for all their residents and visitors. April is Autism Acceptance Month–a reminder that accessibility should be a goal of everyone, no matter the industry.”

To further promote accessibility, the IBCCES has also developed AutismTravel.com and CertifiedAutismCenter.com, offering free online resources for families to identify certified locations and professionals. Each organization listed on these platforms has met Certified Autism Center™ (CAC) requirements. The Town of Florence thanks the IBCCES for its partnership and is proud to join the Greater Florence Chamber of Commerce and other certified organizations striving to better serve members of the autism community.
